Hot Dog, Canine Defender of the Innocent - Issue 4
Pop Goes the Evil

Introduction

Eight years since Hot Dog issue 3? Wow.

It was never my intention to wait so long between Hot Dog comic books. To be sure, Hot Dog has appeared a number of times between then and now, most noticeably in Hot Dog and the Cubes issue 1 and The Other Corner special, both in 2014. However, it's been quite a while since the last full Hot Dog story was released in 2008.

Whenever I write something like a Hot Dog or a Koala Smith story that takes place outside of the regular Cubes semimonthly comic strip, I always look for ways to more firmly tie things together. I personally enjoy the fact that all the characters coexist in the same world together.

One of the earliest ideas I had for Cubes was that Hot Dog could be included at various points. This has always been challenging though, due to the infrequency of Hot Dogs appearances. I have to assume that a good chunk of my readers either haven't seen Hot Dog at all or have forgotten about him. That makes it very difficult to work him into a four panel comic strip as I have to establish who he is, what crime he's there to foil, and have him take care of that crime, all while trying to shoehorn in some humour and the other Cubes characters.

In the last couple of years, I've started taking steps to make it easier to fit Hot Dog into the Cubes comic strip. There is a plan of sorts in place and Hot Dog issue 4 is one part of that plan. Here we have Hope Calers guest starring from the normal Cubes comic strip to appear alongside Hot Dog. Those that have watched the semimonthly Cubes comics closely may have noticed that Hope is a bit smitten with the canine defender of the innocent.

What would happen if Hot Dog wasn't the only one with an alter ego? What indeed?
