Koala Smith - Issue 1
The Apple of Elppa

Introduction
In 2007 I started considering different ideas for new projects to expand the Cubes universe. Among them, was one for a character in the vain of various adventure movie and TV heroes. Toying with the idea for a bit saw the creation of Koala Smith. A treasure hunting adventurer.

In thinking about all the old serial movies it occurred to me that there were a lot of comical possibilities. The nature of these types of stories is that the hero goes from one predicament to the next. Each new development places the hero in an increasingly perilous situation. It seemed obvious that a bit of fun could be had poking at these various adventure conventions.

One difficulty with this new idea lay in determining how to tie Koala Smith in with the rest of the Cubes world. All of the other projects I've done relate together in some way, but there didn't seem to be a way to make such a link between globetrotting Koala Smith, and the city bound characters of Cubes and Hot Dog.

Eventually I hit upon the idea of having the adventures of Koala Smith be an actual television show in the Cubes world. Following from this, it meant that the characters in Koala Smith could be portrayed by actors who lived in the same city as the other Cubes characters. This in turned provided the opportunity to have the different sets of characters get together. But that's a tale for another time.

If hazardous undertakings have a name, it must be Koala Smith.
